THE REIKI PRINCIPLES

Reiki is an oriental technique and one of the most ancient spiritual healing methods known to mankind. In modern times this was re-discovered by Dr Mikao Usui, a Japanese monk in the mid 1800's. While teaching in a Christian college Dr Usui was asked by a student how Jesus healed people by the touch of his hands. To answer this question Dr Usui resigned from college and set out to learn the secrets of this healing method. His journey took him to many far-eastern countries, where he went through various ancient scriptures, Buddha's teachings, spent time at the Zen monastery, and even had to learn Chinese and Sanskrit. Finally he discovered a formula in the Indian Sutras, the 2500 years old Indian scriptures written in Sanskrit, for contacting a higher power that could bestow healing. As he followed the directions in the formula by meditating and fasting for 21 days, he received an attunement and knowledge into the use of the Reiki healing power. Subsequently he practiced and taught Reiki in Japan for the rest of his life. He died in 1926 and before that passed on the healing techniques to sixteen teachers known as Reiki Masters, and since that time more and more students/masters have and are being regularly initiated worldwide.

Reiki means Universal Life Force or Energy of Love. This force is inside and around us and is known as the force of Life, Love and Light or Creation, Preservation, Transformation. The knowledge that an unseen energy flows through all living creatures; humans, animals, even plants, has been part of the wisdom of many cultures since ancient times. There are different words for this energy in all different cultures and religions of the world. The Japanese call it 'Ki', the Chinese know it as 'Chi', Hindus call it 'Prana', Christians term it as 'Light', and in the modern language it is known as 'Bioenergy' or 'Cosmic energy'. Human beings are constantly receiving this by breathing and through food.

Reiki as re-discovered by Dr Usui is a process to receive an extra amount of this energy through Initiation, which opens an energetic system inside our body of unused channels which exist within all of us, but are not active. Through these channels the Universal Life Force can enter us and nourish our bodies in a better and more balanced way. Once you have been initiated, you receive the power to give to yourself and to others the qualities of the Universal Life Force; Love, Life and Light, by simply placing or directing your hands towards various parts of your body or another person's body. This is known as the healing power of Reiki. The natural healing energy flows in a concentrated form from the hands of the giver as he becomes a channel to receive and give. No personal energy is drawn or drained from the giver; infact he personally gets charged and healed as he receives and gives out.

As the Life Force is responsible for nourishing the organs and cells of the body, when-ever its flow is disrupted by negative thoughts or feelings, it causes diminished functions in one or more of the organs of the body. These negative thoughts get attached to the energy field and cause disruption in the flow of the Life Force. Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. The negative energy breaks up as Reiki clears and heals the energy pathways, to allow the Life Force to flow in a healthy and natural way. It also cleanses the body of built up toxins, calms the mind to relieve pains and re-instates the body's natural ability to heal itself. Reiki does not conflict in any way with medical procedures but rather supports and enhances all medical treatments. It can be effectively incorporated into the healing arts of health professionals both in traditional and alternative medicine.

For the purpose of getting Initiated, Reiki is divided into three levels according to the three states of human evolution, as per the capacity of our energetic system to absorb the powerful force of Reiki.

The first level is Reiki 1, which is the first initiation process consisting of four initiations within a short period of time. In this level, the healing power is permanently given by the Reiki Master to the student and this will remain with you for the rest of your life.

The second level is Reiki 2 which is very different from the first level, as it needs a strict commitment to ethics and secrecy. To fully understand this level one needs total sincerity, clear consciousness and a strong constructive desire towards positive and good actions to heal and serve others. This level includes teaching of some secret symbols which greatly increase the efficiency of the healing power. It is an extremely powerful process and real dedicated students are required for this second level of initiation, to prevent misuse of the power of these secret symbols.

The third level is Reiki 3 or the Master degree. This level is considered extremely secretive and it has to remain as such, to protect the healing powers of Reiki. In this level the main consideration is the personal qualities of the respective student, his commitment level and devotion to Reiki, for taking up the tremendous responsibility and challenge to initiate people.

Over all Reiki is a beautiful and simple natural healing technique, easy to learn and easy to practice, to heal yourself, your family, friends and even pets. According to Level 1 'Self-healing' is the first important step in becoming a Reiki channel. Once you begin your own healing and see the tremendous benefits you derive within a short time, then you are in position to support and help others in their own healing processes. If one member from every family can come forward to learn Reiki, the world would become a more peaceful, happier and healthier place to live in. Reiki is the Energy of Love, the Universal Life Force of Life, Love and Light, and it heals not only the body, but also the mind and soul. This healing power is beyond mankind's created limits, as you will be healed no matter what is nature of your disease.
